The 2022 Ford Explorer has a choice of two engines, including a 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. Some drivers will prefer the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 option that delivers a groundbreaking 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. A hybrid option pairs with a 3.3-liter naturally aspirated V6 and an electric motor to produce 318 horsepower and 322 pound-feet of torque. The Ford Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds, making it a capable vehicle. Rear-wheel drive architecture is standard across the trims except for the Platinum Hybrid and Timberline off-road models with all-wheel drive. All trims feature a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The ST trim offers 20-inch machined aluminum wheels, a sport-tuned independent suspension, and Miko leather seats. With the Timberline trim, you get a unique Timberline Grille and badges, 18-inch high gloss aluminum wheels with the Timberline logo, and a rear bumper step pad.

The Limited trim has a leather-wrapped steering wheel, multi-color ambient lighting, and a B&O sound system. The ST-Line trim has door-sill scuff plates, ActiveX seat material, and a blackout treatment on the headlamps and taillamps. The XLT trim has first-row heated seats and a reverse sensing system. The base trim comes with standard features such as a power liftgate and rear view camera.
