While a test drive can’t tell you everything about a car, it can tell you a lot. Here are some tips from Lawrence Hall Ford on how to take a test drive that helps you make the right vehicle choice.
Tip #1: Find a good open stretch of road
You want to see how the car handles at higher speeds and how well it can accelerate. Strong acceleration helps you know if it can pass slower vehicles safely.
Tip #2: Push the car a little
Don’t get a speeding ticket, obviously, but test the upper limits of your vehicle to see what it can safely do. You don’t want an under-powered car.
Tip #3: Listen for noise
A tight, well-insulated car is typically a better-quality vehicle. Listen for rattles, squeaks, wind and road noise. If the car is quiet, you’ll appreciate that on road trips.
Tip #4: Bring your stuff and see how it all fits
Bring your phone, charging cable, sunglasses and the things you normally carry in your car. See if there are convenient cubbies and storage areas for all your essentials.
Tip #5: Try out the climate controls
Even if the weather is cold, make sure the A/C works well. Same goes for the heating system. Make sure temperature controls are easy-to-use and not a distraction.
Tip #6: Try managing the infotainment system
Some vehicles try so hard to be “tech-y” they’re hard to use. Make sure your car’s infotainment controls are simple. Buttons and knobs can help.
Tip #7: Try parking it
